DEFINITIONS & MEANINGS

A keyword is a clue,
not a command.

Keyword
A word or phrase entered into a search system. It gives partial evidence of what a person wants to know or do.
Search intent
The purpose behind a query—for example, learning, finding a specific site, comparing options or completing a task.
Broad keyword
A short, general phrase covering many possible needs. It may attract a large audience but gives limited context.
Narrow keyword
A more specific phrase that adds role, audience, problem or condition. It often points to a clearer content need.
Search volume
An estimate of how often a phrase was searched within a stated tool, place and time period. It is not a permanent or universal count.
Competition
A tool-specific estimate of how many pages or advertisers compete around a phrase. Different tools define it differently.
CPC
Cost per click: an advertising estimate, not a measure of educational importance or truth.
SEO
Search engine optimization: improving the clarity, usefulness and technical presentation of content so suitable audiences can discover it.
DATA-LITERACY NOTE

Old numbers can teach
new research habits.

The broad workbook contains a compatibility report dated 2015, while the PDF uses historical metrics and makes ranking predictions. These files are preserved as supplied learning evidence. Their volumes, competition scores and traffic forecasts must not be presented as current facts without fresh verification.

BROAD × NARROW ILLUSTRATION

Specificity changes the lesson.

Sample values below come from the supplied workbooks. The workbooks use different columns and may reflect different tools or dates, so their volumes should be studied within each source—not compared as one live ranking.

Narrow phrases can reveal an audience, task, role or constraint, but still require interpretation.

FUNCTIONAL INTENT PRACTICE

What does the searcher need?

Select a phrase to reveal the likely search intent and a responsible content response.

REPORT INTERPRETATION

Separate measurement
from prediction.

Measurement

A recorded or estimated value tied to a named method, tool and period—such as the report’s search and competition columns.

Prediction

A forecast about future ranking or visits. It depends on assumptions and should be labelled as uncertain.

Editorial decision

A human choice about whether a phrase represents a useful, safe and relevant lesson for the intended learner.

The PDF recommends “work from home jobs for teens.” A responsible modern lesson would also verify legal, safety and safeguarding considerations before offering job guidance to young people.
PRACTICAL ILLUSTRATION

From phrase to useful lesson

  1. 01Collect

Record the exact phrase, source file, metric labels and date clues.

  2. 02Classify

Identify broad or narrow scope and the likely intent.

  3. 03Verify

Check whether the topic, figures and named services remain accurate.

  4. 04Design

Create content that answers the need clearly without stuffing repeated keywords.

  5. 05Review

Measure usefulness, accessibility and learner understanding—not traffic alone.

GUIDED ACTIVITY

Build a six-keyword learning map.

Choose two broad and four narrow phrases from the supplied sheets. For each, write the likely intent, one learner question, one suitable course format and one fact that must be freshly verified. Finish by selecting the phrase that would produce the most useful lesson—not merely the highest number.
